Connect. Share. Learn

A crucial part of creating an authentic multicultural cooking unit relies on making connections with people in your community that come from the countries you will cover. Here in Ithaca, we are fortunate to have quite a cosmpoplitan crowd! Beside looking into local resturants which may highlight dishes you are covering, consider tapping into parents of children, local cultural organizations, or college associations. Below is a list of local Ithaca resources.

Artifacts: The Einaudi Center houses eight core international programs in Cornell’s Uris Hall. Each program lends out culture kits, chock full of authentic artifacts, clothing, and literature from regions around the world. In addition to this, they can also arrange for international speakers to visit your program. As if this was not exciting enough, these services are FREE! To pick up a culture kit, speak to each program’s Outreach liaison:

LASP (Latin America): 607.255.1468

EAP (East Asia): 607.255.6222

SEAP (South-East Asia): 607.255.2378

IAD (Africa): 607.254.5000

Music and Books: The Tompkins County Public Library hosts an array of international books, movies, exhibits, and music. All you need is a library card!

Visitors: Local student organizations such as Cornell's ALANA Intercultural Programming Board, the African Dance Repertoire, the Bengali Students Association, and the French Society of Cornell are open to collaborating with schools and after school programs. In addition to this, organizations such as Cultura! (Latin America), or AWI (African Women’s Initiative) offer free workshops, lend out artifacts, and occasionally, come by for visits.
